Academic Integrity - Referencing, Citation & Avoiding Plagiarism: Introduction

Sections of guide were originally created by Jenny Collery, Nessa Collinge, Maolsheachlann O'Ceallaigh (UCD Library) and we are very grateful for permission to re-use them in this guide.

Academic Integrity - What is it?

Academic Integrity is defined as "the commitment to, and demonstration of, honest and moral behaviour in an academic setting" (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Writing Center). It involves "compliance with ethical and professional principles, standards, practices and consistent systems of values, that serves as guidance for making decisions and taking actions in education, research and scholarship" (ENAI, 2022).

What this means in practice is you can achieve academic integrity through sound academic writing, avoiding plagiarism, and the use of appropriate referencing and citation.

This guide will introduce:

  • Core principles of academic integrity and why they matter in university study
  • Proper referencing and citation techniques for different types of sources and materials
