Cite While You write

Download Cite While You Write to quickly insert references and automatically create bibliographies while you write your papers. It is now available for both Word and Google Docs. However you need Endnote desktop access to use with Google Docs.

Download

For the Word version

  • Sign in to your Endnote online account. 
  • Go to the Downloads tab
  • Select the correct download for your operating system

  • To link your Endnote account with Cite While You Write go to the Endnote tab and click Preferences

  • Select Application tab. Change to Endnote Online and enter your login details

To use with Google Docs. You need Endnote desktop access for this:

  • Download via Google Market Workplace 
  • Click Install.
  • Review T&Cs and privacy policy and click Continue to proceed
  • Sign into your Google account and allow Cite While You Write to access
  • Go to "Extensions". At the bottom you will see "EndNote Cite While You Write"; place your cursor on it and select "Open". 
    NOTE: You may need to refresh the page to see the "Open" option.

  • You will be prompted to sign in to your EndNote Web account. Once you sign in, you will be able to start adding in your citations and bibliography.

Inserting citations

  • Choose the place in your manuscript, where you would like to insert a citation.
  • Click on the Endnote tab

  • Click “Insert Citations”.
  • Search for the citation using keywords, author names, publication year etc.
  • Select the correct citation and click Insert.
  • This inserts the citation and also adds the citation to the bibliography at the end of the document

  • The “Style” shows you the recently used bibliographic style. Use the dropdown list to select another referencing system.

Edit citations

You can also edit citations, for example to include page numbers when quoting. Do NOT edit by typing directly in the inline citation or bibliography. EndNote codes associated with the citation may be changed and your document could become corrupted.

  • Place your cursor on the citation you would like to edit
  • Click on the EndNote menu tab in the Word toolbar.
  • Click on Edit Citation(s). 
  • You can choose to Exclude Author or Exclude Year from the citation by checking the boxes.
  • Add a prefix or suffix by typing text in the Prefix or Suffix boxes. The text will appear before (prefix) or after (suffix) the citation.
  • Add page numbers to the citation by entering numbers into the Pages box.  
  • Click OK to close the dialog box.

Remove citation

  • Place your cursor on the citation you would like to edit
  • Click on the EndNote menu tab in the Word toolbar.
  • Click on Edit Citation(s). 
  • Click dropdown beside "edit reference" and choose remove citation.  Do NOT use the Delete or Backspace key to remove a citation from your Word document. EndNote codes associated with the citation may not be erased and your document could become corrupted.
  • Removes the citation both in-line and in the bibliography
