Endnote Web: Adding references

Capture Reference

  • Use the Capture Reference feature for online resources (eg. web page) that do not have options for direct export.
  • Go to Downloads tab and follow instructions for Capture Reference
  • Capture Reference scans the bibliographic information and creates a reference. This can also be manually edited and added to any group in your library.

Import references from databases

  • Save the references in your chosen database. See the Saving References page for how to do this in Cinahl and Pubmed.
  • Hover over the Collect tab, then click Import References.

  • Browse to select the file. PubMed will be *.nbib format. Most others are *.ris
  • Select the Import Option (import filter) that matches the database where you created the file. Import PubMed refs as PubMed (NLM). Import .ris files as RefMan RIS
  • Select the group for imported references.

  • Click Import. 

Manually adding references

  • Click on the Collect tab and then on the New Reference link.
  • Use the dropdown box to select Reference Type. You need to change it to reflect the reference you adding to your library (e.g. Conference paper, dataset).
  • Fill in the Bibliographic Fields with the information that you have, e.g. author, title or publisher.
  • Click in the field you want to edit and it will expand to allow you to enter your information. Clicking outside the box automatically saves the information you have entered.
